ugh Hefner Sky Villa, Palms Casino Resort,Las Vegas

What does $40,000 buy? If you're an average American, it's nearly your annual household income. If you're a well-heeled traveler, it's one night at the Hugh Hefner Sky Villa, a two-story, 10,000-square-foot hideaway with a $700,000 cantilevered Jacuzzi that juts over the Las Vegas Strip, a rotating bed beneath a mirrored ceiling and around-the-clock butler service.

The Playboy-themed digs, which opened last fall at the Palms Casino Resort (www.palmsfantasy.com), is the most expensive of 101 hotel suites featured in a just-released annual survey by Elite Traveler (www.elite-travelerdigital.com), whose readers make more than $5 million a year. Southland hotels on the list include the Hotel Bel-Air, the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and the Beverly Wilshire, a Four Seasons hotel. In last year's survey, top-priced rooms cost a mere $25,000 per night.

Not much is known about the Royal Penthouse, largely because the hotel staff are reluctant to publicise it. But one insider said the suite is almost exclusively reserved for heads of state and celebrities. “Bookings are almost exclusively through the hotel’s chairman”, he said.

Royal Suite, Burj Al Arab,Dubai, United Arab Emirates

If Elton John and Donatella Versace teamed up to create a hotel, it would probably look a lot like Dubai's Burj Al Arab, which describes itself as "tremendously bold." The hotel's two Royal Suites are a gleeful explosion of all things gold, glittery and marble. Then again, what would you expect from a hotel that is shaped like a billowing sail and is the tallest hotel in the world (1,053 feet high, only slightly smaller than the Empire State Building)?

To put the Royal Suites in context, the Burj Al Arab also has its own submarine ride to an underwater restaurant complete with shark-infested aquarium, and it is built on top of a manmade island (merely crossing the bridge will cost you $55). Guests are met at the airport in a Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph. The two Royal Suites, located on the 25th floor, are split-level rooms joined by a private elevator. The rooms feature a private cinema, whirlpool baths and rotating beds. Each room also has a meeting room, dining room, dressing room and butler's room with a separate entrance. The décor is a mix of Greek, Arabic and over-the-top Italian as interpreted by Versace (some of the bed linens are indeed Versace).

Royal Armleder Suite, Le Richemond,Geneva, Switzerland

Rocco Forte's Le Richemond is entering the final stage of its renovation. The hotel will re-open on 21 September 2007 with a new seventh floor, which will be entirely dedicated to a Royal Suite, named the Armleder Suite, after the family that formerly owned Le Richemond.

The huge Armleder Suite is a truly flexible space. A huge living area (measuring 70 square metres) can be linked to one, two or three junior suites, thanks to a series of doors along a central corridor. When all three suites are booked, the Armleder Suite covers 250 square metres.

The living area is perfect for entertaining. Light and airy, it offers every home comfort, including a real log fire, perfect for warming the cockles after a day's skiing in Chamonix. The contemporary design is paired with Art Deco and classic touches, in the shape of original works of arts, an eclectic collection of antiques and some furniture that has been designed for the space by the designer John Stefanidis.

Rich and sensual materials have been used in the soft furnishings, while the room itself is decorated with marble, gold, mosaics and parquet flooring. All the latest technology is a given and all the windows on this top floor are bullet proof, while luxurious highlights include a private sauna and under floor heating.

An additional 100 square metres of terrace wraps around the entire seventh floor and has stunning views over the old part of the city to Lake Geneva and the Alps, with Mont Blanc in the distance, to one side and vistas of the Jura Mountains to the other side. Stylish furnishings adorn the terraces.
